Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco star in "Day Shift," a vampire hunting movie. The movie follows the story of a hard working blue collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires as part of an international Union of vampire hunters. The premise sounds fun, but can director J.J. Perry deliver?
Jamie Foxx's opening scene in Day Shift is an action sequence that sees him shotgun blasting an old lady who turns to be a Vampire. It then leads into a nuts fight between the pair that is so much fun. I felt that the movie had a lot of fun using this type of ragdoll Physics in its action sequences, which makes them pop in an action scene that many other Netflix action movies or action blockbusters don't. It's hard not to think of the old adage about how "action speaks louder than words" when watching a scene like this, and while there is certainly some truth to that, I think part of the reason "Day Shift" is so effective is because it knows how to use both action and dialogue to further the plot and character development. For example, after Jamie Foxx's character finally kills the vampire, he has a hilariously dry exchange with his partner about how he "thought she was going to turn into a bat or something." These are the moments that make "Day Shift", a movie unlike any other.
Day Shift has the quality of a bad movie. It's so obvious what they were trying to do, and yet they failed so miserably. It is lacking in acting ability, dialogue, and plot. But somehow, I found myself enjoying it. It could be that I am a sucker of vampire movies, or it could just be that I love watching bad movies. Day Shift was fun. It's not a great movie, but it's a lot of fun. That's really all I want from a movie such as this.
Day Shift was a very mixed movie. While there were some good action scenes, and some interesting characters (the two brothers, Seth), the villain was terrible, and there were a lot mediocre characters. I suppose that helps the more talented characters shine. There appeared to be scenes missing from the film. Bud's neighbor acts almost like they're close friends, even though only three minutes were available before the last scene. Bud making prank calls at the gas station while he was working at his job (original blog) is the best part. It was hilarious. I loved it. Then, however, the movie went on and the movie was far less enjoyable. Day Shift is mixed. There are some great parts and some terrible parts. You could find a better movie if you are looking for some laughs.
Snoop Dogg was almost forgotten about. He's great in Day Shift. He makes the entire movie worth your time. His humor is infectious and he delivers some memorable lines. More than that, he is just so naturally in the role. He's natural at the role.
